Description

If you’ve ever wanted to leave it all behind and go live on a boat, this might be the closest most of us will get.  We packed up our recording gear and went to Stillwater, MN to record a houseboat on the St. Croix River.  Much of what we captured is the sound of the houseboat motoring up the river at several speeds, accelerating, decelerating, and maneuvering.  It’s a different animal from a speedboat – there’s much more mass and surface area to move, and in addition to the motor details we got some great quad recordings of the interior of the houseboat while underway (with all the windows either open or closed), affixed shotgun mics to the bow and sides to get some very articulate water movement against the hull, and even hauled the quad array up to the roof to get all the perspectives we could think of.

The St. Croix is busy, with lots of recreational boating every day.  In spite of this, we did manage to snatch a few minutes of quiet floating with the motor off and the water lapping at the hull.  We also captured the horn blowing, steering wheel movement along with other interior sounds like cupboards and doors, and, because we happened to have the chance, a pontoon boat pulling away, driving by the dock we were standing on, and pulling back in again.  Though these recordings don’t make up the bulk of this pack, we feel that they add variety and detail to an already useful package!

All files are embedded with comprehensive metadata for optimal use in Soundminer, Basehead, Pro Tools Workspace, and more!

Important note about the release formats:

In order to best accommodate our customer’s needs we’ve decided to release this product in 2 formats-

  1. Poly Wavs – up to 10 channels

    1. More compact organization where all mic channels are embedded into 1 neat file
    2. Best for users whose sound application allows for viewing of track channel information or a “leg picker”.
    3. “Legs” or “Stems” clearly marked as to source.
  2. Multiple sets of Wav files (Multi Wav)
    1. An organized matching set of QUAD + Stereo + Mono files
    2. Best for users whose sound application makes it difficult to extract just one (or more) “legs” or “stems” from a Poly Wav.
    3. Allows for easy transfer of just one (or more) POV’s.
