Description

The wind in your hair, boat rocking beneath your feet, the splash and spray of waves against the bow, sails flapping in the wind – what could be better than a day spent sailing? Recording it! We grabbed our field recording kit and miced up an immaculately maintained 1977 Ericson 32-foot sloop (fiberglass construction, aluminum mast and boom, wood paneled below-deck) for two separate excursions out onto the vast expanse of Lake Superior. You’ll get many different perspectives, including a quad array up on deck under the main sail, 2 different stereo setups down below, a set of “roaming” shotguns, and a set of static shotguns over the side and the bow. We’ve included both static ambience and some sequences with movement on deck, as well as details of sails flapping, the anchor dropping, and more. There is one long 12 minute sequence of the Captain getting the boat ready to sail while out on the water with no wind or other sounds. It’s a super clean sequence of 1 person working such that every preparation is recorded in isolation.

In most cases we removed any Non-sailing related sounds but occasionally the necessities of sailing meant moving on-deck to keep the boat sailing where we wanted it. We separated “clean” sailing sounds from any major sail movement or rigging sounds into files of their own.

Moored at dock; mast wires rattling; taking out sail and attaching to jib; pulling lines; raising the halyard; Mainsail-only sailing; All sails sailing; stepping sounds; tacking; coming about; wing-on-wing; lowering Genoa sail; clutching and de-clutching rope lines, wrapping around the winches, cranking the winch and much much more!

One other note: Duluth/Superior is a noisy place with factories and ships coming and going and a highway next to the harbor. We did our best to “lobe” the mics, and shield our work from the “industrial” sounds. Occasionally some of these sounds come through the static harbor recordings, but we don’t feel that they are ever overwhelming. Once we headed out onto the vast lake, those sounds were negligible (yes, we know sound carries over water, but we went pretty far out). The sailing recordings are clean! We were able to record some lovely quiet floating and gentle sailing recordings with no audible industrial noise.

All files are embedded with comprehensive metadata for optimal use in Soundminer, Basehead, Pro Tools Workspace, and more!

This product contains 69 sets audio files (POLY WAVE).

Important note about the release formats:

In order to best accommodate our customer’s needs we’ve decided to release this product in 2 formats-

  1. 10(or8)-channel Poly Wavs
    1. More compact organization where all mic channels are embedded into 1 neat file
    2. Best for users whose sound application allows for viewing of track channel information or a “leg picker”.
    3. “Legs” or “Stems” clearly marked as to source.
  2. Multiple sets of Wav files (Multi Wav)
    1. An organized matching set of QUAD + Stereo + Mono files
    2. Best for users whose sound application makes it difficult to extract just one (or more) “legs” or “stems” from a Poly Wav.
    3. Allows for easy transfer of just one (or more) POV’s.
